Jonathan Stark Earns All-America Honors
3/28/2018 8:44:00 AM | Men's Basketball
Â
Stark, from Munford, Tennessee, just completed an amazing season in which he was named Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year and set the Murray State record with 100 made 3-point baskets as he was leading the league in scoring for a second-consecutive season at 21.4 points per game. He ended as the all-time two-year scorer at Murray State with 1,408 points. Stark's 2017-18 season scoring total was 685 points, just behind sixth place Cameron Payne (14-15) 707, and fifth place DT Mayes (97-98) 711) in MSU history.
Â
Stark helped the Racers to a fantastic 2017-18 season that had an overall mark of 26-6 and MSU won the OVC at 16-2. MSU's 26 wins marked the ninth time in 93 seasons that a Racer team posted 25 or more victories. The Racers were OVC champions for the 25th time and when they won a pair of games in Evansville, they won the OVC Tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament, each for the 16th time. MSU had the second-longest win streak in the nation of 13-straight when the season ended in San Diego at the NCAA's against West Virginia.
Â
Stark is the 16th Murray State player to be named All-America since Cameron Payne was honored in 2015. Other recent Murray State players to be recognized include Isaiah Canaan (2012) and Cuthbert Victor (2004). Three of the Racers' all-time greats were also All-America selections, including all-time leading scorer Jeff Martin (1989) and all-time rebounder Popeye Jones, who is the only MSU player to be named twice (1991 and 1992). Marcus Brown was All-America in 1994 and finished 3rd in all-time scoring at MSU.
