Memphis Edges Racers With Late Rally

The Murray State softball team lost a late lead Wednesday as the fell at Memphis, 5-4, at the Tiger Softball Complex in Memphis, Tennessee.
Murray State was first on the board in the contest in the opening stanza with a pair of doubles from Lillie Goetz and Lexi Jones to give the Racers an early 2-0 advantage. However, Memphis wasted little time in tying the game in the second on two RBI singles from Erin Parker and Kyler Trosclair Clatt.
Maddy Feeney helped get MSU's offense going again in the fifth when she led off with a double and was brought home in the next at bat on a double from Brenna Finck. After a single from Jensen Striegel moved Finck to third, Lillie Goetz scored her on a sacrifice fly to increase the lead to 4-2.
In the bottom of the sixth, however, things got away from the Racers as they allowed Memphis to load the bases with two outs in the inning. The Tigers then took advantage and surged to a 5-4 lead with a RBI-single from Delaney Smith, who was 4-for-4 in the game, and a two-RBI single from Baylee Smith. Finck gave MSU life in the top of the seventh with a two-out double, but was unable to score her and fell 5-4.
Striegel led Murray State by going 2-for-2 in the game with a run and a walk, while Goetz was 1-for-2 with a run, a double and two RBIs and Finck was 2-for-4 with two doubles and a RBI. Grace Vaughn took the loss for Murray State despite allowing no earned runs on five hits with two strikeouts over 2.2 innings.
Murray State returns to action Friday when it travels to Belmont for a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
