The Murray State softball team swept a doubleheader with Belmont Friday, 1-0 and 4-3, at E.S. Rose Park in Nashville, Tennessee.
In game one, the Racers outhit the Bruins, 6-1, but again had trouble plating runs. Murray State had a big opportunity in the second when it loaded the bases after a leadoff double from Madison Culver. However, nothing came of the full bases situation and the score remained 0-0.
The game stayed scoreless until the sixth inning when Macey Hale led off the frame with solo shot to center field, marking the first home run of her collegiate career and giving the Racers a 1-0 lead. Murray State then got six straight outs in the circle from Haven Campbell to clamp down and pick up the 1-0 win.
In addition to Hale's home run, Culver also had a good day at the plate where she was 2-for-3. Campbell allowed just two base runners, a hit and a walk, in her complete game win, while also striking out three.
In the second game, Belmont was quick to jump into the lead in the first with a leadoff double from Bailey Sims, followed by a home run from Jess Andree to make it 2-0. In the second inning, Andree increased the lead to 3-0 with a RBI single that score Brooklin Lee, who reached on a single earlier in the stanza.
The Racers finally found their way on to the scoreboard in the third when Erika Downey singled and was eventually brought home on another single from Madison Culver to cut the lead to 3-1. Later in the game, in the fifth, Breen Finck began the inning with a single and was moved to third on a double from Downey. Lillie Goetz then brought both Racers home in the next at bat on a single to tie the game at three.
In the sixth, the Racers strung together back-to-back-to-back singles from Maddy Feeney, Finck and Downey to load the bases with one out. After the Bruins got the second out of the inning, Madison Culver drew a walk to score Feeney and put the Racers ahead for good, 4-3.
Downey led MSU offensively in the game at 3-for-4, while Finck was 2-for-3 with a walk and Logan Braundmeier was 2-for-4. Campbell also picked up the win in game two as she pitched the final 5.2 inning and allowed no runs on two hits with five strikeout and five walks.
Murray State continues OVC play in the Music City Saturday when it takes on Tennessee State in doubleheader action at 1 p.m.
