First Pitch
MSU returns home for the first of five consecutive home games Tuesday when Memphis comes to town. Both teams are coming off being swept in conference series over the weekend. The Racers are 13-7 at Reagan Field this season while the Tigers are 3-12 in road games. UM is coming off a seven-game homestand.
Inside the Matchup
The Racers are 17-30 all-time against Memphis at home and defeated the Tigers 10-6 in 2016 the last time the two teams met at Reagan Field. Tyler Dixon tied the OVC and program record with four doubles in the win over the Tigers in 2016. Memphis has won 5-of-6 overall in the series dating back to 2010.
Program Record
With his two doubles over the weekend at Southeast Missouri, Davis Sims has now tied the program record of 22 doubles in a season set by Tyler Lawrence in 2016. Sims is currently second in the nation in doubles this season.
On-Base Streak
In addition to his doubles prowess, Sims has also strung together an impressive on-base streak this season and has currently reached safely in 35 consecutive games. Sims has reached base safely in all but one game in 2018.
Power Surge
MSU hit five home runs in the final two games this weekend at Southeast Missouri and are now tied for third in the OVC with 41 for the year. Mike Farnell and Ramsey Scott lead the Racers with seven homers each this season while Brandon Gutzler is right behind that mark with six.
Scouting Memphis
Tyler Webb is the only Tiger hitting above .300 in 2018 with a .303 average. Webb leads the team with 20 runs, 16 doubles and six stolen bases this season. Kyle Ouellette is second on the team with three home runs and 21 RBIs and is the only Tiger that has played in all 41 games this year. Alec Trela leads the squad with four homers and 27 RBIs. As a team, Memphis is hitting just .237 overall and is averaging a little over four runs per game.
Hunter Smith leads UM with a 2.75 ERA and two saves this season. Jonathan Bowlan has a 2.90 ERA and a team-best 70 strikeouts in 59 innings pitched. Bowlan, along with Alex Hicks, has started a team-high 10 contests in 2018. Blake Bennett leads the team with 19 appearances out of the bullpen and is tied for the team lead with two victories. Daron Schoenrock is in his 13th season as the head coach of the Tigers.
