Austin Knight is making a run at the 2018 Ohio Valley Conference Men's Golf Championship after a first round even par 72 at the at The Shoals Golf Club in Muscle Shoals, Alabama.

Playing the Fighting Joe course at The Shoals, where he had a hole-in-one a year ago as a freshman, Knight was solid in round one with one birdie and bogey on the front nine and the same on the inward nine. His 72 was good for a spot in eighth place in the field of 54. He's one of eight players that were par or better. Knight is chasing Morehead State's Nick Wilkins, who carded a 3-under-par 69.

Round one was a struggle for the Racers with a team score of 314, which left them in 10^th place in the field of 11. With three players that were getting their first taste of the Fighting Joe course, the Racers came out of round one bloodied a bit. Freshman Connor Coombs fired a 79 for a spot in 44th place, while Lance Davis was in 49^th after an 81. Gabe Wheeler was in 51^st place on an 82 and Justin Wendling was in 54^th place after an 87.

Jacksonville State was the first round leader at 286, while Belmont was in second at 289 and Morehead State was in third with a 291. After Tennessee Tech with a 292 in fourth place, there was a three way tie for fifth at 296 between SIUE, Eastern Kentucky and UT Martin. Austin Peay and Tennessee State were tied for eighth at 299. Murray State was in 10^th at 314 and Eastern Illinois was in 11^th at 315.

The Racers will play with EIU in round two with the first shot coming at 8 a.m.

The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at The Shoals is home to two 18-hole championship courses and lies between the Wheeler and Wilson dams on the Tennessee River. Wheeler Dam is named in honor of General Joseph "Fighting Joe" Wheeler - the only Confederate General to attain the same rank later in the United States Army. The OVC Men's Championship has been held at The Shoals five times previously (2009, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017).

For the OVC Men's Championship, the Fighting Joe course will be par 72 with a yardage of 7,258.
