Knight Moves Up To Sixth At OVC Championship

Murray State's Austin Knight goes into the final round of the 2018 Ohio Valley Conference Men's Golf Championship with a spot in eighth place and a chance to record Murray State's best finish at the conference tournament since 2013.

Competing at The Shoals Golf Club in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, Knight overcame a front nine 3-over-par 39 to shave one shot on the back nine to finish with a 2-over-par 74. His scores of 72-74=146 was good for a spot in sixth place in the field of 55 competitors and six shots off the lead of Jacksonville State's Jesus Montenegro who had scores of 70-70=140. Knight shares sixth place with five other players including defending champion Hunter Richardson of UT Martin. If Knight can get into the top-5 in the final round, he'd be the first Racer to earn All-OVC Tournament Team honors since Patrick Newcomb won the event in 2013.

The Racers head into the final round Wednesday with team scores of 314-309=623 and a spot in 10^th place. Jacksonville State is the leader at 575, while Eastern Kentucky (585), Morehead State (591), Tennessee Tech (593) and Belmont (594) rounded out the top-5. Other MSU scores included Lance Davis, who tied Knight for low score of the day, in 37^th place on scores of 81-74=155. Freshman Connor Coombs was in 48^th place on rounds of 79-80=159 and Justin Wendling in 53^rd place on scores of 87-81=168. Gabe Wheeler was in 54^th place on rounds of 82-87=169.

The Racers will play with EIU in round three with the first shot coming at 8 a.m.

The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at The Shoals is home to two 18-hole championship courses and lies between the Wheeler and Wilson dams on the Tennessee River. Wheeler Dam is named in honor of General Joseph "Fighting Joe" Wheeler - the only Confederate General to attain the same rank later in the United States Army. The OVC Men's Championship has been held at The Shoals five times previously (2009, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017).

For the OVC Men's Championship, the Fighting Joe course will be par 72 with a yardage of 7,258.
