The Murray State Racers learned of their NCAA Women's Golf Championship assignment Wednesday when the team gathered in the clubhouse at Miller Memorial Golf Course in Murray, Kentucky.
Â
Appearing in their fifth NCAA Championship since their first in 2009, the Racers are on their way to compete at the University Ridge Golf Course in Madison, Wisconsin. First round play for MSU will be May 7 and finish on May 9.
"The weather is the great equalizer and it will certainly come into play at Madison," said Murray State Coach Velvet Milkman. "Anything can happen when you get in a colder place, but I do think it's the best place for us to have a chance to advance. We thought we would do something last year at Lubbock, but we had an inexperienced team and they're all back. Our seniors, Moa Folke and Anna Moore know this is this is business as usual. Just go out and play and see what happens."
Â
Milkman, the only coach that Murray State has ever had since she launched the program in 1993, has her team in the NCAA Championship for the fifth time since 2009 and for a second consecutive season after they competed a year ago in Lubbock, Texas. Last week the Racers won their 11th Ohio Valley Conference title with a four-shot win at The Shoals GC in Muscle Shoals, Alabama.
Â
In 2017 at Lubbock, the Racers set the team low round for an NCAA event at 302 and a team record of 916. Then freshman, Lucila Puente Rodriguez de Austria led the way for MSU with a 32nd place showing on scores of 76-74-72=222.
Â
A total of 384 participants have been selected for regional competition. Of these players, 132 will advance to the championships finals at (May 18-23) at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Six teams and three individuals will advance from each regional. The other three regional sites include TPC Harding Park in San Francisco, California, the University of Texas Golf Club in Austin, Texas and the Don Veller Seminole Golf Course & Club in Tallahassee, Florida.
Â
Duke, Southern California, Arizona State, Northwestern and Illinois make up the top-5 seeds in Madison. The Racers are No. 16 ahead of North Dakota State and IUPUI. Murray State is just below Idaho and Oregon State.
Â
The OVC also received two individual spots in the NCAA Championship with Eastern Kentucky's Elsa Moberly being sent to Madison and Jacksonville State's Valentina Giraldo being sent to the regional in Tallahassee.
