Racers Squander Late Lead in Series Finale

It was a wild game Sunday afternoon at Reagan Field as Belmont scored seven runs in the top of the ninth inning to rally past Murray State, 13-10 in the series finale as MSU failed to hold on for the series sweep.
MSU (19-24, 7-14 OVC) held a 10-6 lead heading into the final frame, but opened the inning with four consecutive walks. The Bruins (16-27, 10-14 OVC) were able to get four straight two-out hits in the inning as well to tie and eventually take the lead.
The Racers found themselves trailing early in the contest and looked to be in big trouble halfway through the contest as they trailed 5-1 heading to the sixth inning. However, Gavin Wehby turned the game around with a bases clearing, three-RBI double with two outs in the inning to cut the deficit to 5-4. It was just the second hit of the game for MSU.
Belmont extended its lead to 6-4 with a run in the top of the seventh, before the Racers took the lead with a four-run bottom half of the inning. Ryan Perkins smashed a three-run homer that barely cleared the wall in right center field to push MSU out front for the first time, 7-6. It was Perkins' sixth long ball of the year. Later in the inning, Tyler Duke scored on a wild pitch to make the score 8-6.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Racers looked to tack on two more insurance runs as Ramsey Scott got an RBI single to left that was later followed by a sacrifice fly RBI from Jaron Robinson that put MSU up 10-6.
Wehby was the only Racer with multiple hits in the loss as he went 2-for-6 at the plate. Duke was 1-of-2 with a triple and three runs scored while Mike Farnell went 1-for-3 with a pair of runs. Davis Sims went just 1-for-6 but that lone hit was his 24th double of the season and extended his consecutive on-base safely streak to 39 games.
MSU used a total of seven pitchers in the loss, including four in just the ninth inning. Peyton Hayes was saddled with the loss as he gave up two runs in the ninth. Alec Whaley pitched well once again in relief as he went 5.1 innings and allowed just one run on five hits.
The five-game home stand for MSU closes Tuesday as Alabama A&M comes to town for a 6 p.m., contest.
