It's spring and that means the Murray State football team is back on the turf at Roy Stewart Stadium preparing for the upcoming season. During this year's spring season, GoRacers.com will bring you interviews and insights on various players and coaches.
First up is senior defensive lineman Kenney Wooten from Meridian, Mississippi. Wooten burst onto the scene for the Racers after transferring from Itawamba CC and led the team in both sacks, with 10.0, and tackles-for-loss, with 11.0.
GoRacers.com: You transferred here last season after a pretty good career at Itawamba, why did you choose Murray State?
Kenney Wooten: After recommitting from another school a week before signing day, I came on a visit here just six days before. After coming down here, I really I believed in everything the coaches told me. I also got to meet some of my teammates and I instantly felt a connection with those guys.
GR: After a solid first year with the Racers, how do plan on having an even better season in 2018?
KW: Mainly just effort. I am just going to keep pushing myself and not stop, just making every possible play that I can. I just have to keep working every day and make sure my teammates are on the same page and we are all working together and just play football.
GR: One of the things you became known for last season is making big defensive plays, especially sacks. What is going through your mind just as you are about to tackle an opposing player?
KW: It's really just to knock the mess out of them. When I'm pass rushing and I know I am about to get the sack, I just really want to them and that's it.
GR: As someone who has played football on multiple levels, what is your favorite thing about the sport of football?
KW: To me, it's hanging around my teammates. Growing up, everybody I hung out with played football and we built a relationship. When I got here, that's one of the first thing I did was build a relationship. That's really the main thing for me because these guys are my brothers.
GR: Last year you wore No. 30, but this season you made the switch to No. 4. What was the reading behind that?
KW: I just really wanted to do something new and different for my senior year.
GR: Wrapping up, when you leave Murray State, how do you want the Racers fans to remember you?
KW: As a guy that broke records and was the OVC sack leader.
