Despite Hits, Racers Fall Twice To UTM

Despite tallying 10 hits and outhitting UT Martin in each game of Monday's doubleheader at Racer Field in Murray, Kentucky, the Murray State softball team fell twice to the Skyhawks, 3-2 in eight innings and 4-0.
In game one, the Racers gave up two runs in the first and spent the rest of the game playing catch up. Jensen Striegel cut into the lead in the second with a RBI fielder's choice, before Madison Culver tied the game in the sixth with a RBI triple.
After allowing a run in the top of the eighth, Murray State could not plate Lexi Jones, who reached on a single and fell, 3-2. The Racers finished the game by outhitting the Skyhawks, 10-8, but left seven runners stranded on the base paths.
Jones led MSU in the game by going 3-for-4, while Brenna Finck, Sierra Gilmore and Culver each had two hits, with both of Culver's coming as doubles. Despite not getting the start, Haven Campbell pitched the full eight innings for the Racers and allowed just one run on five hits with a strikeout and four walks.
In game two, the Racers once again had 10 hits, but this time left all 10 on base. Meanwhile, UT Martin was able to turn its seven hits into four runs for the 4-0 shutout victory. Eight of the nine MSU starters got a hit in the game with Striegel and Lillie Goetz each coming up with two. Grace Vaughn had a solid relief outing for Murray State and pitched a full six innings, allowing just one run on four hits with a strikeout and a walk.
Murray State returns to action Wednesday when it closes out an eight-game home stand with regional rival Southern Illinois at 5 p.m.
