
Dr. Chad Stewart Remembered For Life Of Service To Murray State

Murray State Athletics is saddened by the news of the passing of Dr. Chad Lee Stewart who died July 5, 2018 at his home in Melbourne, Florida.
The son of one of Murray State's legends, Roy Stewart, Chad Stewart, carved his own lasting legacy at MSU in a career that spanned three decades as an educator, coach and athletics administrator.
When it came to his connection with Murray State Athletics, Chad Stewart coached tennis with the Racers from and was named Ohio Valley Coach of the Year in 1964. Stewart's team had a part in the Racers winning the OVC All-Sports Trophy that year. A former football player at Murray State, he was selected Outstanding Scholar-Athlete prior to his 1957 graduation. In 1965, he began an eight-year tenure at MSU as coordinator of the 15-sport men's and women's athletics program. MSU won OVC championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, golf and tennis during his watch, all while he still served as an instructor in the HPER department.
Stewart was instrumental in planning new and renovating old facilities at MSU, including the construction of the stadium named in honor of his father.
Chad joined his father as a member of the Murray State Hall of Fame in 1993, after Roy Stewart was inducted in 1971.
Chad Stewart was born on March 28, 1931 in Jackson, Tennessee. He graduated from Murray High School and then Murray State University and later earned a master's degree from Indiana University and a doctorate degree from Florida State University.
After graduation, he started his academic career at Olivet College and Morehead State.
When he returned to Murray State, Stewart was department chairman for 26 of his 30 years of service. He was selected as Murray State's distinguished professor and earned distinction as a fellow in the Academy of sports medicine. He was president of his state association and received its highest honor award. He was class president of his sophomore, junior and senior class at Murray High. He is a member of Sigma Chi fraternity and was very active in organizing many alumni activities. He is a Navy veteran and served in the Korean War.
An avid golfer, Chad Stewart was a proud member of the dog soldier golf group and he organized and participated in over 35 annual golf trips.
He is preceded in death by his mother Ryon Stewart, his father Roy Stewart and his sister Bobs Shroat. He is survived by his wife of 68 years Betty Stewart, his son Dr. C. Lee Stewart (Beth), two grandchildren Chad Lee Stewart III and Carlyn Liesel Stewart all of Melbourne, FL, two nieces Phyllis Mitchell of San Antonio, Texas and Cathy Mitchell-Roberts of Murray, Kentucky and a nephew Jerry Hopper of Mayfield, Kentucky.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m., Saturday, July 14, 2018 at the J.H. Churchill Funeral Home. Entombment will follow in the Murray City Cemetery, with full military honors. Visitation will be held 12:00 p.m. till 2:00 p.m., Saturday, July 14, 2018 at the J.H. Churchill Funeral Home.
