Knight Wins Back-To-Back TVGA Match Play Titles

Murray State's Austin Knight won consecutive Tennessee Valley Golf Association Match Play Championship titles in the 95^th staging of the competition at Clarksville Country Club in Clarksville, Tenn.

As the defending champion from 2017, Knight was the No. 1 seed in the event that began with 120 players and was trimmed to 16 for the match play finish. Knight had two close matches in the first round and then in the quarterfinals. In his first match, he defeated No. 16 seed Kyle Binkley 1-UP when he took the lead for the first time with a birdie on the 18^th hole. In the quarterfinals, Knight took down T.J. Ferry (No. 9) in 19 holes by winning the first playoff hole. In the semifinals, Knight won the first two holes, but was tied with Wes Spannuth (No. 12) as they reached the back nine. Knight ended up winning it 4&2 to advance to the title match where he faced five-time champ Jeff Walker (No. 7). Knight won another tight match 2&1 to take back-to-back championships.

2018 Irvin Cobb Golf Championships
Several Murray State golfers, both present and past took part in the Irvin Cobb Championship over the weekend in Paducah, Kentucky at Paxton Park Golf Course.

Murray State's Rhett Cardwell led the group of current student-athletes with rounds of 73-72=145 and a spot in 31^st place in the field of 99 competitors. Gabe Wheeler placed 36^th on scores of 73-72=145. John Buchanan placed 48th on scores of 76-72=148. Carson Holmes had scores of 76-74=150 for a spot in 64^th place, while Justin Wendling was 67^th on rounds of 76-74=150. Quinn Eaton placed 87^th on scores of 79-76=155.

Former Racer, Nick Newcomb took home the professional title at the Cobb on scores of 71-65=136. Other former Racers that are now professionals included Andrew Mitchel and Matthew Zakutney who shared ninth place in the field of 99 competitors each on scores of 70-70=140. Cameron Carrico was 13^th on rounds of 70-71=141 and Duncan McCormick placed 59^th after scores of 75-74=149 as did Mitchell Moore on scores of 72-77=149.

There were also former Racers in the amateur field including Josh Rhodes who had rounds of 72-66=138 to finish in a tie for first before losing in a playoff. Chris Griffin placed 14^th on scores of 70-71=141 and Lance Davis had scores of 73-76=149 and placed 56^th.
