The second scrimmage of the Murray State football team's fall camp is in the books and GoRacers.com caught up with senior defensive lineman Rashad Johnson after Saturday night's festivities to get his thoughts on how it went.
GoRacers.com: How did tonight go for you and your teammates, defensively?
Rashad Johnson: I feel like we did well as a defense, we still have a few kinks to work out, but as a whole, we were pretty good.
GR: After being here for three seasons, what is it like to come into camp as a senior and take on a leadership role?
RJ: It's a great experience. To be able to lead these freshman in the right way and to tell them how we do things, as Racers, has been really great.
GR: There are a lot of new faces on your side of the ball, how do you think the new players are coming along?
RJ: They are coming along, a little bit of coaching here and there and they will be good. The freshman have already shown some outstanding work and have also shown dedication to learning. They just keep coming out every day and practicing hard, while the upper classmen are helping by teaching the younger guys the play calls and just the general speed of college football compared to high school. By the time the season gets here, everyone will be ready to go.
GR: What did you see from the other side of the ball tonight?
RJ: The offense was really good tonight. The hit us for a couple of big plays, they executed well, they moved the ball down the field and they were on point tonight. They had a lot of connections and defensively, we slipped up a couple of times, but we will be back, we will compete with them again and we will be ready to go.
GR: The first game is just 19 days away, where do you the feel the team is right now?
RJ: We're very close to being ready. We have really come together as a team in the past couple of weeks, we're getting the play calls down, listening to our coaches and playing hard. The competition is also there, everyone is ready to play, from the freshmen to the seniors, we're ready to go.
