Racers Open Camp With Heightened Energy

rThe Murray State football team officially opened the 2018 season Thursday night at Roy Stewart Stadium in Murray with the first practice of fall camp.
After day one, head coach Mitch Stewart, who enters his fourth season at the helm of the Racers, was impressed with the energy and attitude of the team. "Lot of energy, great energy, that's probably the biggest takeaway from today," said Stewart. "It's always like that the first day, so now the challenge is to replicate that the second day. So that's out challenge, because as far as first days go, today was one of the best ones we have had.
The Racers return 56 letterwinners and 17 starters from a season ago including Kenney Wooten, who led the league in sacks in 2017 and was a Preseason All-OVC selection. Other key players returning for Murray State are another preseason OVC pick, kicker Gabriel Vicente, defensive back Marquez Sanford and quarterback Shuler Bentley. Joining Bentley at quarterback this season will be graduate transfer Drew Anderson, who comes to the Racers after playing at FBS Buffalo.
Fans will get their first look at the Racers on Aug. 30 when Murray State kicks-off its 89th season of football at home against local rival Southern Illinois at 6 p.m.
