Murray State Athletics was pleased to have the first Women's Empowerment and Education (WEE) event (Oct. 14) in the Murray Room of the CFSB Center in Murray, Kentucky.
Â
The first WEE event centered on preparing for job interviews, dressing for success and resume tips. There was also a panel discussion with several female professional leaders. The event was created to have a space where the female student-athletes feel they can develop as women, leaders and professionals. Acknowledging that through education comes empowerment and confidence, both tools that are invaluable for women as they continue their education and continue past Murray State into their professional careers. 130 Female Athletes attended the event, the first of its kind for Racer Athletics.
Â
Ribbon Chix, Murray Independent Schools, Peel & Holland, First National Bank and Murray State Career Services participated in the panel discussion. Ribbon Chix conducted a session on "Dressing for Professional Dress Codes and Interviews."
Â
The panel consisted of Hannah Carroll (Murray State Career Counselor/Internship Coordinator, MSU Career Services), Sally Hopkins (First National Bank, Chief Operating Officer), Janice Winder (Peel & Holland, SPHR, Benefits Account Manager/Human Resource Generalist) and Whitney York (Murray Independent Schools, Digital Learning Coach & District Assessment/Coordinator).
Â
Coach Velvet Milkman, head coach of the MSU women's golf team and assistant women's track & field coach Kelsey Riggins organized the event.
Â
The first WEE event is part of the larger vision that Murray State Athletics calls the Racer Road. It's a new program that will take all MSU student-athletes from their freshman year to senior. The mission is to create a pathway of preparing them to have successful lives and careers long after they've played their final game at Murray State.
Â
The next WEE event will be announced soon for a date in Spring 2020.
