Hawthorne, Gibson Earn Weekly OVC Honors

Laci Hawthorne and Macie Gibson of the Murray State women's basketball team have been named as the OVC Newcomer and Freshman of the Week, respectively, the league announced Tuesday. The announcement marks the second consecutive Newcomer honor for Hawthorne and the first of the season for Gibson.
Hawthorne, a native of Fort Worth, Texas, averaged 11.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game over two wins last week. She finished the week shooting 43.5-percent including an 8-for-16 performance against CBU. The transfer also notched her second double-double of the season against the Bucs of 16 points and 13 rebounds. She also notched three blocks on the week, with all three coming against CBU.
Gibson shot 54.2 on the week from the floor and averaged 16.0 points and 10.0 rebounds. Against Lipscomb, the redshirt freshman notched a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds including 8-of-13 shooting, 3-of-7 from 3-point range, two blocks and a steal. She also finished the week shooting 41.7-percent from beyond-the-arc by going 5-for-12.
Hawthorne, Gibson and the rest of the Racers return to action Tuesday night at the CFSB Center in Murray when they take on Arkansas State at 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
