Racers Come up Short in Two Thrilling Contests

Game 1: Alabama 16, Murray St. 10
The Racers came up on the wrong end of a two-hour and thirty-five minute marathon that featured 26 total runs on 25 combined hits between the two sides. The Crimson Tide struck first in the home half of the first but were quickly answered by three Murray State runs in the top of the second. The Racers were able to take advantage of opposing pitching miscues to get on the board early. A hit batter and back-to-back walks ran the bases full for Murray State before Logan Braundmeier put bat on ball driving in Madison Culver. A one out double to center field courtesy of Lillie Goetz drove in another pair of Racer runs to close the inning. Alabama would continue the offensive dialogue in their half and posted another of their own. MSU would cling to a 3-2 lead through two innings of play.
This would prove to be just a small dose of what was to come offensively for both squads. Fast-forwarding to the fourth, Bailey Hemphill broke open the scoring for the Crimson Tide by way of a one out, three-RBI double to center field. They would tack on one more in the inning and lead 7-3 after the fourth.
It seemed like "everything after two" was the theme for Murray State on the day and the fifth inning was no different. With two out and two strikes on Sierra Gilmore, she delivered a two-run double to left center. She would later score thanks to a single off the bat of Lexi Jones to trim the Alabama lead to a single run at 7-6 through five complete.
With the score tied in the sixth inning, the resilient Racers showed they could deliver in clutch moments when Danielle Walls pinch hit for Jensen Striegel and jumped on the first pitch she saw, sending it deep to left for a three-run home run with two outs in the inning to give MSU a 10-7 lead through their half of the sixth.
While the Racers crafted a thrilling comeback, the bats had not yet clocked out for the Crimson Tide as they answered with authority producing nine runs on ten hits, including a three-run home run from Hemphill in the home half that capped her four hit, seven RBI performance. The Racers failed to muster any runs during the final frame and fell to Alabama with a final of 16-10.
Eight different Racers collected a hit in the ballgame and were led by Danielle Walls, (1-1, 3 RBIs, HR) Sierra Gilmore (1-3, 2 RBIs, 2B).
Game 2: Troy 2, Murray St. 1
While the first game of the day was an offensive shootout, the night game against the host Trojans of Troy told a different tale. A product of a hard-fought pitching duel, the game saw just three combined runs on nine hits. Both teams were held scoreless until the Racer half of the fifth inning when Logan Braundmeier broke up the no-hitter with a two out triple to left field driving in Lindsey Carroll to get Murray State on the board.
While Hannah James was turning in an impressive outing on the mound, a defensive collapse was responsible for both of Troy's runs in the bottom of the fifth after the Racers failed to make a play on an infield pop-up and an ensuing throwing error brought the original batter all the way around to score. The Racers would be held hitless the rest of the outing and fell to the tournament host 2-1. Hannah James went the distance for MSU on the hill striking out three on eight hits while not allowing a single earned run through her six innings of work. Braundmeier (1-2, RBI, 3B) was the lone bright spot at the plate for the Racers.
