Kiawah Island Awaits Racers For Spring Opener

The Murray State women's golf team gets their spring season going Sunday when they play the first round of the Kiawah Island Spring Classic in Kiawah Island, South Carolina.

The 54-hole event plays 18 holes each of three days through Tuesday and is billed as the largest event in collegiate golf, the Kiawah Island Spring Classic has a field of 48 teams and more than 250 players. The event is played at the Osprey Point and Oak Point courses.

Having been picked as the favorite to win the Ohio Valley Conference Championship in April, Coach Velvet Milkman saw her squad win twice and posted a second and third place finish last fall. She sends out a line-up of: Linette Holmslykke, Sarah McDowell, Lucila Puente Rodriguez de Austria, Jane Watts and Anna Moore with Raeysha Surendran in the event as an individual.

Holmslykke was honored as OVC Golfer of the Week three times last fall and enters the spring season first in the OVC in stroke average (72.6). McDowell had a pair of top-5 finishes and is 10th in the OVC in stroke average (76.1). Along with Holmslykke, Moore, Watts, Puente Rodriguez and Surendran give the Racers a lot veteran experience.

In Sunday's opening round, the Racers are paired with Delaware and will play Osprey Point in an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
