A familiar foe making its first visit to The Track in over two decades and a trip between the hedges are a couple of the highlights the 2019 Murray State football schedule announced by head coach Mitch Stewart Tuesday.
"I love having the ability to play two FBS opponents, one of which is a College Football Playoff caliber team," said head coach Mitch Stewart of the schedule. "Obviously, it will be a treat for me to come back home to Georgia and play my brother's alma mater and it will be interesting to see if he's wearing red and black or blue and gold! I'm very excited to play Morehead State, as that will be a new opponent for me with new and different challenges. They score a lot of points over there, so that will be a very good gauge of where we are at as a team going into our conference schedule."
"Looking at our conference schedule," Stewart continued, "it is very similar to last year's schedule. There will be new faces with some of the teams so that always makes for new and exciting challenges as well. However, I don't care who the opponents are or what order they are in, the biggest opponent we have is ourselves. That is what we are focused on now and what we continue to be focused on, this team and being the best version of this team we can be!"
Year five of the Stewart era will begin on Thursday, August 29 when the Racers host NAIA Pikeville under the lights at The Track. The following week the Racers will take a trip to the quintessential college town of Athens to take on the Georgia Bulldogs.
From Georgia, Murray State heads to Ohio to take on Toledo, followed by the first visit by Morehead State to Roy Stewart Stadium in over 20 years on Sept. 21. On Sept. 28, the Racers will kick off their 71st season of OVC football on the road at UT Martin.
Other home games include Oct. 19 against Eastern Kentucky, Nov. 2 against Tennessee Tech and after a week 11 bye week, a Nov. 16 home finale against Austin Peay in a Heritage Bank Battle of the Border contest. Road contests for 2019 include a trip to Hale Stadium on the campus of Tennessee State Oct. 12, Oct. 26 at Jacksonville State and the regular-season finale Nov. 23 at Southeast Missouri State.
The announcement of the schedule precedes one of the biggest days of the offseason calendar for the Racers Wednesday, National Signing Day. Once all the ink is dry, Stewart will address the media at noon in the Racer Room with the press conference in its entirety available later in the day on the Racer YouTube channel.
