The Murray State football team had its first scrimmage of the spring 2019 season, Saturday at Roy Stewart Stadium in Murray, Kentucky. GoRacers.com caught up with Coach Stewart after the scrimmage Saturday and got his thoughts on his team's first dress rehearsal of the season.
On The Offense
"Offensively, I thought that we had some good drives, but I tell you, the thing I was most proud of offensively, is that we handled some adversity pretty well. However, there were a couple of drives where we got behind the sticks, or we may have had a third-down conversion that came back due to a penalty. We played very inefficiently, we were not great on third downs, we were not great in the red zone, we're not good in the red zone and we had too many penalties."
On The Defense
"Defensively, I thought we were very good on third down, made some big time plays in the red zone and had some turnovers in the red zone, which is one of the biggest positives you can have is turnovers in the red zone. We were very poor on third down, however. I don't know if that took them by surprise or what, but we have got to be better on fourth down if someone wants to go against us on fourth down. Finally, we have to be better just tackling in open space. Overall though, if I had to pick a winner, defense probably won the day."
On Special Teams
"We just did a kicking competition today and Colin Boyd has been showing out all offseason. He's a guy, that through the offseason and winter workouts, we did a lot of competitions and I don't think he has lost a competition yet and even after today in both the kicking competition and punting competition, I think he's still undefeated. It was a lot of fun though, it was good to get those guys out where in front of everybody. We did it the way that we did it because we have some injuries at our offensive skill positions, so we needed a chance to slow those guys down and let them catch their breath. Because of that we kind of intertwined those special teams in the middle of skelly and team, just to give those guys a chance to calm down. It was good because it we got a chance for the whole team to go out there around those special teams guys and give them a little bit of adversity, but I thought all of them handled it very well."
On The Three Biggest Positive Takeaways From The First Scrimmage
"The biggest one is just the way that this team competes, they love to just put the ball down and go. They like playing football, they don't like all the other stuff, they like playing football and that's a good thing. That's what I love about them, they like to play, they like when you put the ball down and they can go play. Offensively, I think that we've got some guys that have got some big play potential. That's always good to see. Defensively, I think we're playing better in our base defense."
On Three Areas That He Feels Need Improvement After The First Scrimmage
"Finishing drives, both offensively and defensively. Offensively, we've got to be able to put it in and defensively, we need more three and outs and finishing drives quickly before they get started. Offensively, I still think we need to be a little bit better in space. That is the standard that we set, you are supposed to be dynamic in space. We didn't have a lot of that today, we didn't break a lot of tackles. Conversely, defensively, I think we have to be better at tackling in space. There were a couple of times that we weren't really that dynamic, we just over-pursued the ball and didn't speed our feet up on contact, so we've got to be better at that. Lastly, just situational football. Third-downs, fourth downs, red zone on both sides of the football. We just have a lot of work to do, which you're supposed to, you're supposed to have a lot of work to do there, we just have to keep getting better in those situations."
