Racers Carry Lead To OVC Championship Final On Moore's Record 66
4/16/2019 3:25:00 PM | Women's Golf
The Murray State Racers kept themselves in a position to win their third-straight Ohio Valley Conference Women's Golf Championship with a second round sc
ore of 289 and a record-setting 66 from Anna Moore, Tuesday at The Shoals Golf Club in Muscle Shoals, Alabama.
Â
Led by Moore's 6-under-par 66, the Racers had scores of 291-289=580, which gave them a five-shot lead over Eastern Kentucky (296-289=585) heading into Wednesday's final round. Jacksonville State (596), Belmont (602) and Austin Peay (611) made up the top-5 teams through 36 holes.
Â
Moore's round is her career-low at Murray State and it ties the OVC Tournament mark by MSU's Moa Folke in 2017 at Hampton Cove when she also shot a 66 in the second round of the event. Moore made the turn with a 1-under-par 35 and then scorched the back nine in 5-under-par 31. She eagled the par-5 11th hole and made four birdies at the 12th, 13th, 16th and 17th holes. Moore's scores of 73-66=139 pushed her into first place in the medalist chase.
Â
MSU's Linette Holmslykke was in third place on scores of 71-72=143, while Jane Watts was in sixth place on scored of 72-76=148 as she finished the second round with two birdies in the final three holes. Raeysha Surendran gave the Racers four players in the top-10 with a spot in 10th place on rounds of 75-75=150. Freshman Sarah McDowell was in 34th place on scores of 85-78=163.
Â
When the Racers begin play Wednesday morning in the final round at 9:40 a.m., they'll be trying to win the OVC Championship for a third-straight time after taking the title in 2017 and 2018. Coach Velvet Milkman's teams have already accomplished three in a row twice. They did it in 1997 to 1999 and again from 2002-2004.
Â
"I can't say enough about the way our team played today," Milkman said. "We've done a great job of staying in the moment and putting ourselves in position to have a chance to win it. Anna played a fantastic round today and I am very proud of her. So we'll get some rest tonight and come out tomorrow and try to put together another solid team round, because that's what it's going to take to win it."
Â
Round Two Notes
There have been two eagles so far in the OVC Championship. JSU's Ana Perez Altuna had the first of the event when she eagled the par-4 1st hole by knocking it in from the fairway on her second shot. MSU's Anna Moore made the second when she eagled the par-5 11th hole. Â
Â
Anna Moore's 66 was better than her previous best round at MSU when she shot a 69 in March of 2018 at the North Florida Intercollegiate at Jacksonville Country Club.
Â
Moore tied the OVC Championship record low score with a 66. Murray State's Moa Folke set the record in 2017 with a 66. EKU's Alsa Moberly shot a 67 today for the third lowest score in the event.

About The Shoals
The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at The Shoals is home to two 18-hole championship courses and lies between the Wheeler and Wilson dams on the Tennessee River. Wheeler Dam is named in honor of General Joseph "Fighting Joe" Wheeler - the only Confederate General to attain the same rank later in the United States Army. The tree-lined Schoolmaster Course (named for President Woodrow Wilson who was responsible for getting Wilson Dam built and was also known as "The Schoolmaster" of politics), opened in the Summer of 2005. Schoolmaster is more of a traditional layout with every hole keeping with the natural topography along the Tennessee River. This is the second year the event will be held here.
Â
For the OVC Women's Championship the Schoolmaster course will be par 72 with a yardage of 6,025.
