Racers Ground Skyhawks in OVC Home Opener
4/5/2019 8:01:00 PM | Women's Tennis
Murray State women's tennis hosted the Skyhawks of UT Martin in their first home OVC match of 2019 on Friday afternoon. In their fourth conference match of the year, the Racers improved to 3-1 in OVC competition after a 4-3 triumph over UT Martin at the Bennie Purcell Tennis Courts in Murray, Kentucky.
Â
Despite dropping the doubles point, the Racers were able to win the day, thanks to outstanding individual efforts in singles competition. Claire Chang (6-2, 6-1), Amina Hadzic (6-3, 6-3), Aarja Chakraborty (6-1, 6-2), and Sara Loncarevic (6-0, 6-3) won their respective matches in straight sets to give the Racers the 4-3 victory on the afternoon.
Â
"Today is one of those days that we have to be happy that we got the win. Winning the match after losing the doubles point is always tough, and I am very happy we were able to pull it off today," said MSU head coach Jorge Caetano. "Overall, we know that we still haven't reached our full potential. I believe today's win showed us that if we have the right attitude, even when we are not playing our best tennis, we can still get the wins."
Â
Aarja Chakraborty and Amina Hadzic have now won four straight singles matches for the Racers, who are 3-1 at the halfway point of the conference season.
Â
"I am happy with the way we competed in singles today and with how we were able to find a way to come back from 2-0 down to get an important win," added Caetano. "I am very proud of the way Claire handled herself out there today, playing with a great mindset and getting the job done. It was also great to see Sara playing smart and fearless tennis again after a tough loss last week. Aarja and Amina dominated their opponents their whole match, and I am very happy with the way those two are playing right now," concluded Caetano.
Â
The Racers look to build on today's performance when they return action on Saturday afternoon, as they take on the Redhawks of Southeast Missouri State at the Bennie Purcell Tennis Courts in Murray, Kentucky.
