Carey, Brown, Chakraborty, Innes Recognized as Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars

Due to outstanding academic and athletic achievement, four Murray State student-athletes have been recognized as an Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar for the 2018-19 season. Dacia Brown (Volleyball), Destiny Carey (Track and Field), Aarja Chakraborty (Tennis) and Nadine Innes (Women's Golf) have all been named the second team of the respective sports as announced in the latest issue of Diverse magazine.
Diverse Magazine sponsors the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Awards to honor undergraduate students who have excelled in the classroom as well as on the athletic field. The awards are inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe Jr.'s commitment to education as well as his love for the game of tennis. In addition to their athletic ability and academic performance, Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars demonstrate a commitment to community service and student leadership.
Brown just finished up her senior season with the volleyball team where she was named All-OVC First Team and helped the Racers to a 22-10 record and the OVC Tournament Championship. She enjoyed her best season as a Racer as she racked up 445 kills, 76 digs, and 51 blocks. In the classroom, she is pursuing her master's degree in organizational communication and had a 4.0 GPA this past fall and cumulative GPA of 3.61.
Carey is currently in the midst of her junior season on the track and field team where she competes as a thrower. This season, she has set personal bests in the hammer throw (45.52m), shot put (14.54m), and the weight throw (15.32m). In the classroom, she is studying communication disorders where she currently has a cumulative GPA of 3.83.
Chakraborty receives the honor after recording an 11-6 singles record in dual matches with a 7-1 mark against OVC competition in 2019. A testament to her dedication in the classroom, she has maintained a 3.76 cumulative GPA, which included a 4.0 GPA during the 2018 fall semester at Murray State.
Innes just wrapped up her senior season with the Racer golf team. Her low round of the year came when she shot a 73 at the Jan Weaver Invitational hosted by Murray State. In the classroom, she had a 3.33 GPA in the fall semester and a 3.52 cumulative GPA while majoring in Mathematics/Applied Mathematics.
