Racers Set for Exhibition at Western Kentucky

Murray State women's soccer will open the 2019 campaign with an exhibition match on the road against Western Kentucky on Wednesday evening. Kickoff between the Racers and Lady Toppers is slated for 6:00 p.m. (CT) from the WKU Soccer Complex in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
The match will serve as a final tune-up before Murray State opens the regular season schedule on Thursday, August 22nd when they host Big East opponent Xavier at Cutchin Field in Murray.
Entering 2019:
The Racers roll into 2019 after a 2018 season that saw a 13-5-1 record and a second-straight NCAA Tournament appearance after being crowned the 2018 OVC Tournament champions for the second consecutive season. Murray State has now been crowned either an OVC regular season champion, or an OVC Tournament champion in each of the last four seasons.
The Racers return each of their top three goal scorers in Miyah Watford, Rebecca Kubin, and Abby Jones, and will look to build on this very foundation that guided a 2018 offense that ranked 2nd in the Ohio Valley Conference in scoring.
Perhaps the most difficult task for Murray State as they embark on a new season will be replacing goalkeeper Alex Steigerwald, who played all 1,734 minutes while allowing just 23 goals between the posts in 2018. While the loss is significant, the Racers enter 2019 with plenty of depth at the position as they carry four goalkeepers on the roster in Jamie Skarupsky, Cera Prather, Jasmine Rosell, and Jenna Villacres.
Having replenished the roster across the board, the Racers cruise into the year with 12 new faces that aim to provide a spark to an already-electric Murray State lineup.
Scouting Western Kentucky:
The Lady Toppers, who were ranked 10th in the Conference USA preseason poll, turned in a 5-8-4 overall record while going 3-5-2 against C-USA opponents in 2018. They found great success at home, however, as they finished with an undefeated 4-0-4 record when playing at the WKU Soccer complex.
Western Kentucky returns preseason All-Conference USA selection Ambere Barnett, who tallied seven goals and eight assists during her freshman season in 2018, while they also welcome 11 freshmen to the 2019 roster.
