The Murray State football team took to the field Wednesday night for its third scrimmage of fall camp. Afterwards, GoRacers.com caught up with defensive back Nigel Walton and linebacker Anthony Koclanakis for their thoughts on the night.
GoRacers.com: How do you think the scrimmage went tonight?
Anthony Koclanakis: It didn't go too well for us. There were a lot of plays where, schematically we should have been there and we just didn't make the play. Offense got some easy points from just too many mess ups and not everyone being on the same page. We did have a lot of people banged up and a lot of people playing out of position, but at the end of the day we have to hold that down as a corps because that scenario could happen during the season and we can't let other teams torch us during the season because of that.
GoRacers.com: Where do you think the defense is in terms of being ready for the first game?
Nigel Walton: On a scale of 1-10, I'd say the defense is at a six right now. What do we need to do to get to a 10? One thing is we have to stay together when things aren't going our way. We also have to learn to whip blockers and make plays. Me, certainly, on the outside as a corner, I have to whip blockers and make plays. We have to learn to finish plays on the outside as corners and make the plays that we are supposed to make. For our linemen, contain the pocket and sack the quarterback, while the linebackers have to learn to finish and shut down the run. Our safeties are doing pretty good, as long as our safeties hold it down and get better at coverage we will totally be that 10 defense that we need to be.
GoRacers.com: What did you think of you opponents tonight, the defense?
Nigel Walton: The offense really got to us tonight. Big plays by Maserati [D'Andre McMillian], the freshman from Florida, he turned on the jets on that one screen. Armani Hayes made a big play on me on the sideline on an amazing jump ball throw by Brendan Bognar. That was a great play by Armani, I think he's going to have a good year.
