That’s A Wrap! – Racers End Fall Camp

The Murray State football team wrapped up its fall camp Monday with a tough afternoon practice at Roy Stewart Stadium.
The heat Monday proved a brutal final obstacle for Murray State, but it was one head coach Mitch Stewart felt like his team cleared with flying colors.
"We needed this, we really needed this today," said Stewart. "Football is a tough game for tough people and I thought we did a nice job of being tough today. Especially coming off of our previous practice, I did not think we were tough in that practice, but we really challenged the guys today coming out on the field. We challenged them mentally and physically to be tougher and I thought that they answered the bell, so I am very proud of them."
The team's final practice was just an echo of what has been a hard camp for all involved, however it is one that Stewart thinks will have his team ready come Aug. 29.
"It was a good camp, you know it had its ups, downs, happies, sads, mads, all the stuff that you need. However, it was a tough camp, it was a really tough camp. We challenged the guys from a schedule standpoint, you know we lifted them early in the morning and practiced at night, which was good from a standpoint of keeping everybody relatively healthy. We didn't really have a lot of soft tissue stuff that you usually have with hydration issues, but we did have some guys that really battled their fannies off. So overall it was a good tough camp and I believe we are tougher coming out of the back end of it.
The next step for Stewart and his staff will be to evaluate the entire camp and come up with their first depth chart of the year. Although, the initial battles may be won at most position, no position is ever safe and each one is up for grabs every day.
"Positions are very fluid," said Stewart. "That's kind of our deal recruiting and the depth chart have a lot of fluidity. It's a daily evaluation of who's got it and who doesn't. Just because you have it on a Monday, doesn't mean you'll have it on Tuesday, which doesn't mean you are going to have it on a Saturday. We kind of do it daily, we put these guys through a lot and they are accountable for a lot of stuff, class, on the field, off the field, meetings, practice, effort the whole bit, alignment assignments and we evaluate every bit of it."
With that, the Racers now turn to game week preparation in advance of their season opener Aug. 29 against Pikeville at Roy Stewart Stadium.
