Racers Open Fifth Fall Camp Under Stewart

Year five of the Mitch Stewart era began Friday with the opening day of fall camp under the lights of Roy Stewart Stadium in Murray, Kentucky. With the entire team reporting the day before, the 2019 Racers took to the field for the first time Friday giving coaches, media and the fans that attended their first look at what's ahead for Murray State football this season.
After the first two hour session with his team, Stewart appeared pleased with day one. "Great, great energy. That is what we talked about, was we wanted to set a standard on the first night, because the first night is easy. If you're not excited about the first night, then you won't be excited about the second, third and fourteenth nights. That was kind of our main focus was to come out here and set a standard, that way we know what we are chasing every day after that, for us to get better. Was our execution there? No, not at all, it was first day execution, but our effort was really, really nice and that is probably what I'm most excited about."
Setting a bar is critical for Stewart and his staff this season, as they will look to help the Racers improve on last year's 5-6 campaign that included a 5-3Â record in the OVC. The overarching theme for the Racers this season is one-percent or getting better a little every day and never being satisfied with where you are. So in order to get better, to improve on last season, Stewart needed to see where his team was day one and overall, he was pleased with what he saw.
"You have to get better every day and that's what we wanted to do tonight. Set a standard of effort, of sharpness, of details, of enthusiasm, execution, all of those things. We wanted to set a standard tonight; we did that on some fronts, we did not do that on other fronts. So now, it's just about getting that one-percent better. Each day that we come out here it's just about deciding at this position what does that one-percent look like, at this position what does that one percent look like, on this side of the ball what does that look like. It's a tangible thing that you can keep chasing every. You know people talk about 'hey we want to give 110-percent', well there is really no such thing. You are never going to be perfect, you are never going to be 100-percent, but you can get better every day and that's what we are trying to do. We want to be the best version of ourselves on each particular day."
Stewart and crew will continue fall camp Saturday with nightly practices, six nights a week, at Stewart Stadium until classes resume later this month. Murray State will officially kickoff its 95th season of football under the lights of The Track, along with Racer I and the Racer Band, Aug. 29 against Pikeville at 6 p.m.
