Murray State women's soccer will return home to host the Hoosiers of Indiana University in a non-conference contest on Friday afternoon. Kickoff is slated for 3:00 p.m. from Cutchin Field in Murray, Kentucky.
Last Time Out:
The Racers earned their first victory of the 2019 season in their last outing, a 2-0 triumph over Samford on the road in Birmingham, Alabama. A pair of goals from senior Miyah Watford gave Murray State the win over the Bulldogs, who were receiving top-25 votes in the most recent United Soccer Coaches Poll earlier this month. Watford, who has netted three goals in two matches to open the season, was named the Ohio Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Tuesday. Jenna Villacres made her second start of the season between the posts for the Racers, and earned her first career shutout after recording 13 saves to preserve the clean sheet. Additionally, her 24 saves through the first two matches is the most in the nation (Division I programs).
As a team, the Racers produced nine shots in addition to earning five corner kicks on the day.
Scouting Indiana:
Indiana enters Friday's match with an overall record of 1-1 after they defeated UIC 1-0 in their last time out on Sunday. Their loss came in a 3-0 match against #2 North Carolina in the season opener on the road in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
Indiana returns five starters from a year ago, including junior goalkeeper Bethany Kopel, who recorded 188 career saves in her first two seasons with the Hoosiers.
Another notable returner is team captain Chandra Davidson who was responsible for the game-winning goal against UIC while tallying a team-best four shots on goal, and was one of three members of the 2019 squad named to the this year's Big Ten Women's Soccer Preseason Honors List.
Indiana is led by first-year head coach Erwin van Bennekom, who takes over the program after a season that saw the Hoosiers turn in an 8-8-2 overall record in 2018.
All-Time Series:
Friday's competition will be the first all-time meeting between the two programs. In fact, the match against Indiana will be the first time the Racers face a current member of the Big 10 Conference (Murray State played now Big 10 member Nebraska on September 21, 2003 when Nebraska competed in the Big 12).
Weather Forecast:
A sunny high of 88 degrees is expected at kickoff in Murray on Friday. Winds to the south/southwest at around three miles per hour are also expected. Chance of precipitation: 0%
