As the countdown to the season winds down, GoRacers.com decided to look at the five greatest scoring performances in Murray State women's basketball. Heading into its 49th season, there have been man great names to filter through the women's basketball program and the top five scoring games are features so many of those great names. However, first let's look at our honorable mentions just outside of the top five.
Honorable Mention - 38 Points
Sheila Smith – Morehead State (1/18/88; 2/27/89); Ohio (11/28/88)
Jennifer Parker – at Middle Tennessee (2/12/94)
No Murray State women's basketball list is complete without an appearance from one of its all-time greats and the only retired number in program history, Hall of Famer Sheila Smith. Smith never could get to 40 points in a single game, but she scored 38 on three separate occasions with all three coming in Racers wins with two of those coming against Morehead State. Her first 38-point game broke the school record for most points in a game, surpassing soon-to-be MSU Hall of Famer Jackie Mounts 36 from 1978, although it would not last long. More on that later.
For Jennifer Parker, her 38 points were never more needed then they were that February night in Murfreesboro. Her big night pushed the Racers to a 79-76 win that would not only snap an 11-game losing streak, but serve as the team's lone win in its final 17 game of the season.
No. 5 - 40 Points
Karen Johnson – at Tennessee Tech (1/25/88)
Jennifer Parker – UT Martin (1/22/94)
Although it's technically top five list, there are six players in the top five due to a tie at fifth with 40 points. Just one week, after Smith set a new school record for points in a game with 38, Johnson scored 40 in a losing effort at Tennessee Tech and although Smith would get to 38 two more times, she would never catch her teammate.
Two weeks before scoring 38 in a win at Middle Tennessee, Parker tried to will her team to a win at UT Martin by scoring 40 of its 81 points in a loss. Despite the loss, Parker did tie Johnson's then school record in the game.
No. 4 - 41 Points
Ke'Shunan James – Austin Peay (2/8/18)
The latest entry to the list came from former Ke'Shunan James and was a highlight in her OVC Player of the Year-winning season. While it was a huge night for the star, it was also bittersweet as she ended the game one assist shy of becoming just the third player in MSU history, (along with Johnson and Mallory Luckett) to register a triple-double. However, she did finish the night a ridiculous 15-for-20 from the floor, 11-of-13 from the free-throw line, to go along with 10 rebounds and nine assists.
No. 3 - 43 Points
Joi Scott – at Tennessee State (2/16/06)
Another soon to be Hall of Famer, Joi Scott broke Johnson and Parker's record in 2006 in a big win at Tennessee State. Scott hit 19 of 24 shots from the field that, setting a still intact school record for most made field goals in the process. In addition to her hot shooting from the floor, she went 5-for-8 from the stripe and pulled down 10 boards.
No. 2 - 44 Points
Mariah Robinson – at Jacksonville State (1/13/11)
The most-prolific 3-point shooter in MSU history, Robinson used a school-record nine 3-pointers to make her way to 44 points in January 2011. Robinson was 9-for-14 from three in the game and 13-for-20 overall, in addition to a cool 9-for-10 at the free throw line. She would go onto finish her career at MSU as its all-time leader in 3-pointers made and attempted at 264 and 768, respectively.
No. 1 – 46 Points
Ashley N. Hayes – at Tennessee State (2/4/11)
Nearly five years to the day that Scott set the school record for most points in a game at Tennessee State, MSU Hall of Famer Ashley N. Hayes broke it in the same place. In a game that went down to the wire, Hayes was 14-for-24 from the floor, 7-for-11 from 3-point range and a perfect 11-for-11 at the free throw line. In fact it was free throws that won the game for MSU, as Hayes and current MSU assistant and fellow Hall of Famer Amber Guffey each went 4-for-4 at the line in the final one minute and seven seconds including two from Hayes with five seconds left to seal the win.
