This semester was an unprecedented one. From the postponement of fall sports to the spring to classes moving online. It's good to take a step back at look at how far we've come since August.
First, rifle was the first varsity sport to start up, beginning competition on October 3rd. They defeated UT Martin in their first event since the cancellation of the NCAA Rifle Championships in March. Rifle continue its winning ways, rattling off four straight wins before falling to No. 1 Kentucky. Matias Kiuru and Allison Henry both set personal records at the third annual Kentucky Long Rifle Match and led the team to a second place finish. The Racers closed out the fall portion of their schedule when they defeated Jacksonville State on Nov. 22.
Men's and women's basketball officially got underway with their first practice on Oct. 14, 42 days before the first women's game against Kentucky on Nov. 25. The women opened their season on the road in Lexington, falling to the Wildcats 86-86 and then winning in their home opener, 84-61, against visiting Evansville. The Racers travelled to Indiana State and fought to the end, but fell 84-80. The tilt with the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devilettes will be game one of a doubleheader on Dec. 8, as the Racer men will Austin Peay later that night in a First Financial Bank Battle of the Border matchup. Finally, on Dec. 14, MSU closes out its non-conference segment with a trip to Florence for a showdown with North Alabama.

Following the cancellations of games due to COVID, the men's basketball team opened their season at the CFSB Center on Nov. 29 scoring a record-breaking 173-95 versus Greenville. The records that fell were numerous; the MSU single-game scoring mark of 173, surpassing the old mark of 138 that the Racers scored against Campbellsville at the old Racer Arena in 1994. The combined score of 268 points bested the 233 that Murray State and Southeast Missouri scored in 2014. The previous first half scoring mark was 62, accomplished three times with the last in 2018. The new record is 87 points. The second half scoring record went from 81, in the same 1994 game with Campbellsville, to 86 points. After losing on the road versus Middle Tennessee, 78-61, the Racers rebounded to beat Illinois State, 76-65. Murray State begins conference play against Austin Peay on Dec. 8. and closes out non-conference play versus Southern Illinois and Prairie View in Carbondale, Ill. and Murray, Ky., respectively.
Murray State SAAC was busy this semester, collecting cans in its annual food drive, handing out thank you cards from the sports teams and promoting and educating students on how and where to register to vote for the Nov. 3rd election.
The annual Can Drive for Murray Calloway Co Need Line collected 2898 cans and $600 in donations!
