Murray State softball completed its weekend at the Coach B classic with two games on Sunday. Splitting the day, the Racers earned a 5-2 victory over Purdue Fort Wayne before falling to the host Salukis 8-6 in an extra-inning thriller from Charlotte West Stadium in Carbondale, Illinois.

The Racers picked up right where they left off in Saturday's 10-2 victory over Creighton, as a solid all-around performance translated to their second-straight win.
The Racers got things going straight out of the gate, putting up the game's first run in the opening frame when a two-out single from Lexi Jones scored Sierra Gilmore to give Murray State a 1-0 lead.
Murray State went on to double their lead in the third, producing a run via heads-up base running when runners on the corners forced a pickle that led to Jensen Striegel scoring from third as the Racers owned a 2-0 advantage through three complete.
It would be freshman Jenna Veber who got the call in the circle for Murray State, as the Oswego, Illinois native found her rhythm early on – holding the Mastodons scoreless through five innings of action.
With two down in the home half of the fifth, Murray State got a clutch at-bat from sophomore Lindsey Carroll when she singled up the middle to score a pair as Logan Braundmeier and Striegel crossed the plate – extending the lead to 4-0.
The Mastodons would get on the board in the sixth, after an RBI single from Morganne Denny and an unrelated throwing error meant two runs as Purdue Fort Wayne cut the deficit to 4-2 after the sixth.
The Racers put up one more in the bottom of the inning when Mashea Glover scored on a Purdue Fort Wayne throwing error on the heels of an Abby Shoulders one-out single.
Veber would record two outs in the seventh, before Taylor Makowsky struck out the final batter of the ballgame to earn the save, as the Racers triumphed with a final score of 5-2.
The final line for Veber featured five strikeouts and just one earned run, without issuing a walk, as the freshman improved to 3-3 on the year.
Offensively, Carroll, Gilmore, Jones, Shoulders, and Striegel collected hits in the contest, with Carroll recording a game-high two RBI.
Southern Illinois 8, Murray State 6 (8 inn.)
The Salukis would get the last word in an extra-inning affair as the Racers fell to Southern Illinois 8-6 courtesy of a walk-off home run in the eighth inning.
Murray State would be the first team on the scoreboard, doing so when a run-scoring single off the bat of Lily Fischer scored Mashea Glover. Fischer scored later in the frame on an error by the Saluki second baseman, as the Racers held a two-run lead after the top of the second.
After SIU got one back in the bottom half of the inning, they would draw the game level when Ashley Wood hit a run-scoring double with one out in the third. The Salukis went on to string together two more hits and another pair of runs in the inning as they owned a 4-2 lead after three complete.
The Racers answered in a big way in the fourth, however, putting up a four-spot in the inning highlighted by a bases-loaded walk from Braundmeier, a two-run single from Carroll, and an RBI-single from Gilmore all with two outs as the Racers reclaimed the lead at 6-4.
A Kyleigh Decker solo shot brought the Salukis within one run in the fifth, before they knotted the game at 6-6 in the bottom of the seventh courtesy of an RBI single from Susie Baranski.
With extra innings in store for the final game of the Coach B Classic, SIU would defend its home field in dramatic fashion when Kyleigh Decker walked it off with a two-run shot to seal an 8-6 victory for the home team.
At the dish, Murray State was led by Lindsey Carroll (2-4, 2 RBI, 2B) and Sierra Gilmore (2-4, RBI) who each collected two hits in the competition.
The Racers return to action on Friday when they travel to Stillwater, Oklahoma for day one of the Mizuno Classic.
