After circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic brought the 2020 Murray State women's tennis season to an abrupt end after just 13 dual matches, the Racers finished the year with an 8-5 overall record that included a 7-1 start through their first eight competitions – their best start since 1999.
Identified as one of the front-runners in the Ohio Valley Conference when they were selected to finish second in the OVC preseason poll, the Racers never got the opportunity to play a conference match during the 2020 campaign.
Winning the doubles point in eight-straight matches to open the year, the Racers consistently displayed a tremendous amount of team chemistry as they approached what would typically be the halfway point of the season.
Murray State also saw a number of outstanding performances from individuals, led by freshman Marit Kreugel who finished with an 11-2 record in dual singles matches after winning her first nine outings primarily at the #4 and #5 positions. Posting a 22-2 combined record between singles and doubles in her first season in a Racer uniform, the Vleuten, Netherlands native turned in a perfect 11-0 doubles record in dual matches with partner Sara Bjork, playing mostly at the #3 position.
Bjork, who missed the entire 2019 season due to injury, also went 5-3 during singles competition as she split time between the #5 and #6 positions in 2020.
Stasya Sharapova, who entered 2020 as the #9 ranked player in the OVC (according to the preseason coaches poll) went 8-3 in dual singles matches at a combination of the #1, #2, and #3 positions on the year. The junior from Astana, Kazakhstan also went 6-6 in dual doubles competition, which included five victories at #1 doubles – four of which came with partner Samantha Muller.
Muller also provided a spark in her first season at Murray State as the freshman earned a .500 mark through all dual matches, going 5-5 in both singles and doubles respectively. In singles, she competed at a mix of the #5 and #6 positions.
Senior Anja Loncarevic added winning seasons in both singles and doubles, as the senior went 7-5 in singles while playing mostly at the #3 and #4. In doubles, she finished with a 6-5 record - notching five of those wins with her twin sister Sara Loncarevic at the #2 position.
