GoRacers.com is offering an in-depth look at one of the most impressive sport performances in the history of Murray State and the Ohio Valley Conference. It's the Murray State women's golf team and head coach Velvet Milkman and their 12 OVC championships.
Â
Check GoRacers.com for a chronological review of the Racers' 12 titles on Mondays and Fridays. We began with the Racers' first OVC title in 1997 posted Monday, April 20.
Â
MSU's second OVC championship came in 1998 as the Racers made it back-to-back titles in the OVC women's golf tournament contested at Arlington Golf Course in Richmond, Kentucky.
Â
In a time when the OVC only had four schools fielding women's golf teams (The OVC has nine in 2020), Murray State blitzed the field with a total score of 930 and won by a whopping 36 shots over host Eastern Kentucky at 966. The Racers won the event with a score line of 318-396-306=930.
Â
MSU's top player, Jenny Daag, who was inducted into the MSU Hall of Fame in 2010, won the medalist honor in 1998 with scores of 76-75-73=224. Another player that became a MSU hall of famer in 2007, Jessica Widman, was second with rounds of 81-77-73=231. Other MSU scores and places included Brandi Stevenson in fourth place on rounds of 81-78-77=236 and Mikki McLeary in sixth place on rounds of 81-76-83=240 and Tina Marshall in 12th place after scores of 80-84-85=249.
Â
"The thing I remember most is how the 1998 championship team showed the toughness and talent of a team that year," said Coach Velvet Milkman who was named OVC Coach of the Year. "We returned four of the five players from the 1997 title team, so we knew we had the ability to win. However, there was the added pressure to repeat and the weather was cold and rainy and course conditions were extremely wet. We were not able to play a practice round and that showed in our first day play. However, the players persevered and shot a program low score for the next two days to win by a comfortable margin. The four returners did their part and we sent the seniors out with a championship. Brandi and Mikki were in my first recruiting class so it was very rewarding for me to see all their hard work pay off and leave Murray State with two OVC Championship rings."
They Racers have won 12 OVC championships and finished runner-up five times in 26 tries. MSU's OVC championships have come in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2009, 2010, 2014, 2017, 2018 and 2019. The Racers have only finished out of the top three only three times.
