GoRacers.com is taking a closer look at one of the most impressive sport performances in the history of Murray State and the Ohio Valley Conference. It is the Murray State women's golf team and head coach Velvet Milkman and the Racers' 12 OVC championships.

Check GoRacers.com for a chronological review of the Racers' 12 titles on Mondays and Fridays.
Â
This chapter in the program's history celebrates MSU's 2009 OVC championship victory at Crooked Creek Country Club in London, Kentucky. It was the only time the women's championship was played at the course. Even so, the Racers solved the puzzle better than the rest to deliver the program's seventh OVC
championships.
Â
The Racers posted a score of 952, which produced an eight-shot win over Jacksonville State at 960. Newcomer Morehead State placed second at 967 as they shared it with Tennessee Tech. Eastern Illinois (968) rounded out the top-5.
Â
In their previous six OVC titles, the Racers had the medalist winner every time except in 1997. However, in this battle at Crooked Creek, the Racers' top finisher was Andrea Downer in fifth place on scores of 79-81-77=237 as MSU had five players in the top-15. Bethany Yates placed eighth on scores of 78-79-81=238 and Joyce Trus was ninth after a score line of 76-82-81=239. Megan McKinney carded scores of 79-79-82=240 and finished 11th and Morgan Cross was in 15th place after scores of 79-80-83=242.
Â
"We knew going to the 2009 championship, the condition of the golf course and the weather was going to be big factors," said Milkman whose team won their seventh title in 16 seasons of the program. "However, we had an early tee time the first day in the wind and this prepared us for the last day when we were in the leader group and experienced high winds. It was truly a team effort with all five of our players ending with total scores within seven shots of each other. This consistency throughout our lineup allowed us to capture the championship. Seldom do you have only one player make the All-Tournament Team and still win the championship, but we did it and we were all very excited to have senior Bethany Yates end her career by winning her first OVC Championship ring."
Â
The season awards from the OVC included Trus getting a nod to the All-OVC First Team and McKinney to the All-OVC Second Team. Cross was a member of the All-OVC Newcomer Team and Downer was named to the OVC All-Tournament Team. Milkman was named OVC Coach of the Year.
Â
The Racers have won 12 OVC championships and finished runner-up five times in 26 tries. MSU's OVC championships have come in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2009, 2010, 2014, 2017, 2018 and 2019. The Racers have only finished out of the top three only three times.
