Racer Rewind - MSU Wins 2018 OVC Women's Golf Championship

GoRacers.com is taking a closer look at one of the most impressive sport performances in the history of Murray State and the Ohio Valley Conference. It is the Murray State women's golf team and head coach Velvet Milkman and the Racers' 12 OVC championships.

We're now looking at Coach Milkman's 11th OVC championship from 2018. The victory at the Schoolmaster Course at The Shoals in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, marked back-to-back championships for the fourth time in program history. The Racers successfully defended their 2017 title with a gutsy finish in windy conditions as they posted a final round 303 to edge Jacksonville State (299) by four shots 898-902. This event marked the first time the OVC had played its championship on the Schoolmaster Course.

The Racers posted scores of 307-288-303=898, while JSU had rounds of 308-295-299=902. Eastern Kentucky finished third on scores of 312-299-299=910.

The Racers placed three of their starting five in the top-5 and they all earned OVC All-Tournament honors. Moa Folke and Lucila Puente Rodriguez de Austria shared second place. Folke, who was trying for a third-straight individual title fell four shots short of Jacksonville State's Valentina Giraldo. The senior Folke, had rounds of 73-69-79=221. Puente Rodriguez had rounds of 73-76-73=221. Raeshay Surendran made a splash from the fifth spot in the MSU lineup earning All-Tournament honors with a fifth-place finish on scores of 77-72-73=222. Anna Moore placed 24th on scores of 88-74-78=240 and Linette Holmsykke was 29th after rounds of 85-73-83=241. They both had a hand in MSU's team win as Moore's second round 74 counted as did Holmslykke's second round 73.

"The 2018 championship was a true team effort," Milkman said. "We felt confident returning the players from the previous year's championship and the players stepped up to the challenge. Having a school record four players named to the All Conference team gave us a lot of confidence. This was a new course as well, and it turned out to be good for us. The players liked the layout and felt it was a fair challenge. We played extremely well the second round and that put us in a good spot going into the last day. The 72 and 73 Raeysha and Lucila posted on the last day was a big boost for us. Moa's even par score on the back nine was also crucial. It was fun to see her go out a two time team champion and a two time individual champion."

Folke's career will stand as one of the best in OVC history as she was bidding to be the first Racer to win three OVC medalist titles. She is one of two Racers that have won twice, along with Jenny Daag (1998 & 1999).

Sophomore Raeysha Surendran had an outstanding event as her score of 222 tied her career-best at MSU at the 2017 Payne Stewart Memorial in Springfield, Missouri.

In 25 OVC Championships, the Racers kept their streak alive of having at least one individual finish in fifth place every time. They had three players in the top-5 in this event.

The Racers have won 12 OVC championships and finished runner-up five times in 26 tries. MSU's OVC championships have come in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2009, 2010, 2014, 2017, 2018 and 2019. The Racers have only finished out of the top three only three times.
