Fernandez Breaks Single-Match Dig Record, Racers Drop First Conference Match

Becca Fernandez broke Murray State’s single-match dig record as the Racers fall to Morehead State, 36-38, 18-25, 21-25 on Friday night
The Murray State Racers volleyball team (8-5, 2-1 OVC) suffered its first conference loss of the season to the Morehead State Eagles (5-9, 1-2 OVC) in straight sets, 36-38, 18-25, 21-25, in Johnson Arena on Friday night.Â
2018 and 2020 OVC Defensive Player of the Year, Becca Fernandez, broke Murray State's single-match (3-set) dig record, picking up a career-high 41 digs in the loss.Â
The marathon first set saw the Racers fall 38-36, which is Murray State's longest set of the season, surpassing their 33-31 second set loss against Evansville. The set saw 18 ties as the Racers fought off nine set points before succumbing.Â
The Racers were led by Brooke Lynn Watts, who notched her second double-double of the season, finished the day with 16 kills and 11 digs.Â
Kolby McClelland and Jayla Holcombe each finished with nine kills apiece.Â
Defensively, defensive specialist Dahlia Miller and outside hitter Alexa Harris both tallied double-digit digs, with 14 and 12 digs, respectively, while setter Bailey DeMier paced Murray State with 42 assists.
The Racers look to bounce back tomorrow at 11 am CT against Morehead State in Johnson Arena.Â
