MSU shoots fourth-consecutive match of 4700-plus
The fifth-ranked Murray State rifle team finished second Saturday at the 2021 Kentucky Long Rifle Match at the UK Rifle Range in Lexington, Kentucky. The Kentucky Long Rifle Match is an annual match between the three collegiate rifle teams in the Commonwealth shot this year with six shooters instead of the traditional five. Kentucky won the match with a 7059, while Murray State followed in second at 7022 and Morehead State in third at 6980.
"Across the board we were solid and consistent today," said head coach Alan Lollar. "The short week we had makes training different, but I think we learn a lot about ourselves when it doesn't come easy. We have one more week left in the fall part of our schedule and we are looking forward to going down to Jacksonville State next week."
As a team, Murray State tied its season-high in smallbore at 2341 and finished with an aggregate score of over 4700 for the fourth consecutive match. This marks the first time since the 2017-18 season the Racers have fired 4700-plus in at least four consecutive matches.
John Blanton and Matias Kiuru led the Racers with a team-high aggregate off 1179, while Kiuru and Allison Henry led the team in smallbore at 586 and Blanton led the Racers in air rifle at 594. Blanton also set a new personal best in smallbore in the match at 585.
Next week Murray State travels to Jacksonville State to wrap up the 2021 portion of its schedule at the 2021 Gamecock Open at the Gamecock Rifle Range in Jacksonville, Alabama.
