KJ Williams Named OVC Player of the Week
2/1/2021 11:39:00 AM | Men's Basketball
Murray State's KJ Williams was named the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week in voting conducted by the league's sports information directors and announced from the league office in Brentwood, Tenn.
Â
Williams, a junior from Cleveland, Miss., is the Racers' first weekly award winner of the 2020-21 season and it comes after he posted two outstanding games as MSU split two home games last week in a win over Tennessee State and a Saturday defeat to Belmont.
Â
On Thursday (Jan. 28) in MSU's 73-53 win over TSU, Williams scored a career-high 25 points on 9-of-16 from the field, including 1-of-3 from the 3-point line and he added six free throws in eight tries. His 16 rebounds tied his career-high. Williams made a run at the CFSB Center rebound record for a single game. The record is 18, by James Singleton against EIU in 2003 and Jarvis Williams against Southeast Missouri in 2013.
Â
In Saturday's 72-71 loss to Belmont (Jan. 30), Williams scored 18 points on 5-of-10 from the field and 2-of-3 from the 3-point line. Williams had his fourth double-double of the season with 16 rebounds.
Â
For the week, Williams averaged 21.5 points and 16 rebounds per game, while hitting 15-of-31 shots (.484) and 3-of-6 (.500) from the 3-point line. From the free throw line, he hit 10-of-13 (.769). Williams added four assists and three steals.
Â
Williams is the Racers' first OVC Player of the Week winner since Ja Morant was honored (02-25-19) at the end of the 2918-19 season.Â
Â
The Racers play Monday night at Southeast Missouri in a 6 p.m. tip at the Show Me Center in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
