Darkness Suspends Play In 2nd Round At GSU Event

The Racers made it through 24 holes before darkness suspended the Strutter Gus Invitational
The Murray State women's golf team began the spring 2021 season Sunday with 18 holes of competition at the Strutter Gus Invitational in Statesboro, Ga.

Originally scheduled to get 36 holes of play in, darkness suspended the second round Sunday evening. The second round be finished Monday morning with the final round played in the afternoon at the Georgia Southern University Golf Course.

Through one round and a half, Murray State's Payton Carter was in 26th place with a round of 80, while Raeysha Surendran's 81 was good for a spot in 49th place. Briana McMinn was in 52nd place with an 82 and Sarah Forsythe was in 56th place on a score of 87. Ana Picchi was in 62nd place with an 86. The Racers have three players in the event as individuals including Lucila Puente Rodriguez in 41st place with a score of 84 and Emmie Eriksson in 66th place on a 91. Charli Doss was in 67th place on a 92.

The Racers' 329 in round one had them with a spot in 10th place in the field of 12 teams and a shot behind Gardner-Webb (328) in ninth place and six shots from eighth place Wintrop (323). The Racers were in front of Appalachian State (330) and Marshall (332). Illinois State was the leader after the first 18 holes at 310. The rest of the top-7 was made up by UNC Greensboro (311), Jacksonville State (312), Seminole State (313), Georgia Southern and Georgia State (317), High Point and Winthrop (323).

Because of the pandemic, 348 days passed between competitions for the Racers. Before today, their last tournament round was March 10, 2020 at the UNF Collegiate in Jacksonville, Fla.

The Racers continue their spring season (Feb. 28-March 2) at the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate in South Carolina and the North Florida Collegiate (March 8-9) in Jacksonville. The Bama Beach Bash (March 19-21) happens in Mobile, Alabama, while the Racers visit the Chattanooga Invitational (March 29-30). The Racers host their home event, the Jan Weaver Invitational, at Miller Memorial (April 9-10).
The OVC Championship returns to Hampton Cove in Owens Cross Roads, Alabama (April 18-20). The 54-hole championship will be played on the Highlands course.

About Murray State Women's Golf
The Racers' program is in its 28th season overall, with the founder of the program, Coach Velvet Milkman guiding the way as the only coach the Racers have ever had. She started the Murray State program in the 1993-94 school year and has coached championship-level student-athletes that have produced 12 OVC championships, the most of any coach at Murray State. Also serving for many years as the Murray State Senior Woman Administrator, Milkman did MSU Athletics a great service by serving as Interim Athletics Director from July 2018 through February 2019. Milkman is involved at the NCAA level shaping women's golf on a national scale. She served a four-year term (2009-12) on the NCAA Women's Golf Committee including two years as chair.

Located in Murray, Kentucky, the athletics department at Murray State University is a member of NCAA D-I and plays in the Football Championship Subdivision. The Racers have 15 programs including men's teams for baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf and women's teams for basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track & field and volleyball. MSU also has a rifle program that is coed. The Racers are one of the founding members of the Ohio Valley Conference from its beginnings in 1948.
