MSU Comes Home With 8th Place Showing At Nichols Intercollegiate

The Murray State men's golf team placed eighth at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate in Sevierville, Tenn., after scores of 285-297-296=878. The Racers finished a shot ahead of Evansville (887) and three shots behind Detroit Mercy (875). Morehead State and UT Martin tied for the title each with a score of 851. Morehead State won the first place trophy on the second hole of the ensuing playoff.

MSU's Avery Edwards led the Racers with a spot in 19^th place in the field of 77 players after scores of 68-75-74=217, while Tyler Powell placed 29^th on rounds of 73-75-72=220. Austin Knight carded scores of 73-72-77=222 for a spot in 34^th place. Connor Coombs and Quinn Eaton shared 37^th place. Coombs had rounds of 71-76-76=223 and Eaton 74-75-74=223.

Nick Wolf of UT Martin won the medalist title on scores of 68-67-69=204 with a 1-shot win over Carson Newman's Joe Muschong who had scores of 67-70-68=205.

The River course at the Sevierville Golf Club played to a Par-72 and a length of 6,891 yards

The Racers' next event is the National Intercollegiate (March 29-30) hosted by Mercer at Reynolds Lake Oconee in Greensboro, Georgia.

About Murray State Men's Golf
The Racers' program is in its 64th season overall and head Coach Eddie Hunt is in his 20th as the second coach in program history. Hunt took over the program in 2001. The founder of the Racer team was Coach Buddy Hewitt in 1959. Hewitt is a Murray State Hall of Famer, inducted in 1990. He was part of the famous Murray State football team that played in the 1948 Tangerine Bowl. The Racers have won Ohio Valley Conference championships four times (1971, 1987, 1991 and 2010). Hewitt won the first three titles and Hunt's team won it in 2010 as their most recent OVC championship. MSU has produced 11 all-time OVC Golfer of the Year winners: Bill Graham (1962, 1963), Ron Acree (1965), Chris Piggot (1971), Chris Carlson (1987), Adam Grogan (1996), Brandon Henson (2001), Nick Newcomb (2010), Cameron Carrico (2011) and Patrick Newcomb (2012, 2013).
