Despite allowing just five hits, MSU falls in nonconference clash at Racer Field
Murray State softball welcomed Memphis to Racer Field for a nonconference matchup on Tuesday. The Racers found themselves on the wrong end of a low-scoring affair in extra innings, falling to the Tigers by a score of 3-2 in eight frames in Murray, Kentucky.
Memphis opened the scoring in the second inning when a Delaney Smith RBI single gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead. A Meagan Chism run-scoring double in the following frame would extend the Memphis advantage to 2-0 through three complete.
The Racers would cut the lead in half with one swing of bat, however, when Sierra Gilmore blasted her third home run of the season – a solo shot to center as the Racers trailed by the slimmest of margins through the home half of the fourth.
Murray State carried the momentum into the fifth, when the Racers created a scoring chance with runners on second and third with just one out. A ground ball from Jensen Striegel scored Jordan Caple from third to make it a fresh ballgame as the Racers and Tigers were level at 2-2 at the end of five.
Freshman Kamryn Carcich entered to pitch for the Racers in the sixth and retired the side in order in both the sixth and seventh frames as the score remained unchanged at the completion of seven innings as Murray State prepared for extra innings for the first time in 2021.
Defensive miscues would prove costly for Murray State in extras, however, as Memphis scratched across a single run in the eighth to escape with a 3-2 victory on the evening.
Jenna Veber tossed five innings while matching a season-high six strikeouts without issuing a single walk in the circle for Murray State. Kamryn Carcich also pitched well in relief as the Ocean Springs, Mississippi native, despite being tagged with the loss, dealt three innings without surrendering a hit, walk, or an earned run.
Lindsey Carroll, Logan Braundmeier, Jensen Striegel, and Sierra Gilmore each collected a hit to lead the Racers offensively while Braundmeier also stole two bases in the defeat.
The Racers will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Edwardsville, Illinois for a three-game weekend series against SIUE. Saturday's first pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
