Racers improve to 7-2 against conference opponents with Sunday's comeback win
Murray State softball wrapped up its weekend series against SIUE with a single contest in Edwardsville on Sunday afternoon. The Racers earned the sweep in dramatic fashion, claiming a 5-4 victory behind a four-run seventh inning as they improved to 7-2 against OVC competition through the completion of three conference series in 2021.
SIUE opened the scoring in the third courtesy of Bailley Concatto's RBI double, but the Racers went on to level the contest in the fifth when Tyler Shemwell drew a bases-loaded walk that scored Jordan Caple tie the ballgame at 1-1.
After the Cougars put up two more in the home half of the sixth, the Racers faced a 3-1 deficit entering the final frame.
A pinch-hit single from Bryce Adkinson gave the Racers a spark in the seventh, before Chloe Jacque's bunt single put Racer runners on first and second with nobody out in the inning. Logan Braundmeier's RBI double in the next at-bat cut the lead in half, before Jensen Striegel drove in the game-tying run when she reached on a fielder's choice. After Lily Fischer was hit by a pitch, a sacrifice fly off the bat of Sierra Gilmore scored Braundmeier to give the Racers their first lead of the day. MSU wasn't done yet, however, as Lexi Jones provided an insurance run when she laced a two-out RBI single to right field as the Racers owned a 5-3 advantage through the visiting half of the seventh.
The Cougars got one back in the bottom half, but Jenna Veber protected the Racer lead in the circle as Murray State earned a sweep of the three-game weekend series with a 5-4 victory.
The five Murray State runs came on six hits, with Chloe Jacque (2-3, R) leading the way with a two-hit performance, while Logan Braundmeier added to her extra-base hit tally with a double on the day. Sierra Gilmore officially went 0-0 in the contest, but reached base three times by way of three walks.
In the circle, Hannah James went five innings in the start, surrendering just one run on three hits in the efficient outing that featured just 60 pitches. Veber notched her third win of the season in her two-inning shift in relief.
