MSU notches five straight-set victories in singles competition on the day
Murray State women's tennis made its 2021 outdoor home debut when they hosted Southern Indiana on Saturday afternoon. The Racers put on a dazzling performance in front of their home fans, cruising to a convincing 6-1 victory over the Screaming Eagles at the Bennie Purcell Tennis Courts in Murray, Ky.
"It felt great playing a match on campus after almost two years. We had a great crowd supporting us, and the team did a good job taking care of business," said MSU head coach Jorge Caetano.
The Racers secured the doubles point when the teams of Sarah Bureau / Anja Loncarevic and Marit Kreugel / Sara Loncarevic both cruised to impressive 6-0 wins at the #2 and #3 positions respectively.
"We were able to dominate the action in doubles from the first point, but I think we played a little too safe sometimes which is something we can't do in our next match."
Singles competition saw more dominant performances as the Racers earned victories at the #1-#5 positions – all of which came in straight sets.
Sara Loncarevic (6-4, 6-0), Marit Kreugel (6-0, 6-3), Sarah Bureau (6-0, 6-0), Anja Loncarevic (6-0, 6-0), and Gabrielle Geolier (6-2, 6-3) each notched a win in singles.
"In singles, I think everyone did a good job overall controlling the matches on each court. I was really happy with the way Sarah and Anja played their singles. They were going for their shots from the first ball in the rally, and the risks they took paid off with nearly flawless matches from both of them."
The Racers return to action on Monday when they host Louisiana Tech at the Bennie Purcell Tennis Courts in Murray, Ky. Match time is slated for 12:00 p.m.
"Monday will be a very tough match against Louisiana Tech. and the team can't wait for it," concluded Caetano.
