Barnthouse hat trick, Heckman assist land both conference weekly accolades
Izzy Heckman and Chloe Barnthouse of Murray State women's soccer have been recognized as the Ohio Valley Conference Defensive and Offensive Players of the week respectively, as announced by the league on Sunday.
Barnthouse recorded the first Murray State hat trick since Julie Mooney's on October 10th, 2014 when the freshman found the net three times in the Racers' 4-0 victory over Eastern Illinois on Tuesday. She finished a rebounded shot off an initial strike from Rebecca Kubin in the fourth minute before putting away a pair of headed efforts in the 47th and 82nd minutes of action via crosses from Izzy Heckman and Riley Johnson respectively. The West Bloomfield, Michigan native also generated a career-high seven shots (four on goal) in the hat-trick performance that was the 12th in program history.
Heckman provided the assist on Murray State's third goal on Tuesday when she whipped in a brilliant ball that found the head of Chloe Barnthouse. The senior from Powder Springs, Georgia also captained a Racer back line that did not concede a single shot on goal in the contest on the way to its third clean-sheet performance of the season. She also recorded four shots (two on goal) of her own in the competition.
For Heckman, the weekly honor is her first of the season and the third of her career. For Barnthouse, the award is her first in a Racer uniform.
The Racers will return to action on Thursday when they meet Southeast Missouri in the OVC Tournament Semifinals. Kickoff is slated for 11:00 a.m. from Cutchin Field in Murray, Kentucky.
