OVC Championship Day 1 – Surendran Strong As Racers Chase JSU

MSU senior Raeshya Surendran was two shots off the lead and the Racers as a team were 11 shots off the pace at Hampton Cove in Owens Cross Roads, Alabama
The Murray State Racers began play Sunday at the Ohio Valley Conference women's golf championship at Hampton Cove Golf Club in Owens Cross Roads, Alabama.
After the first day of three days of competition, the Racers were in fourth place in the field of eight teams after a score of 303. Jacksonville State was the leader at 292, with Eastern Kentucky and Belmont tied for second place at 301. After the Racers in fourth place, Austin Peay (304), Morehead State (306), Tennessee Tech (308) and Eastern Illinois (336) rounded out the field.
MSU's Raeysha Surendran was in fifth place after a 1-over-par 73, while Ana Garcia Picchi was in ninth place after a 74. Sarah Forsythe had a spot in 18th place on a score of 77 and Payton Carter's 79 was good for a spot in 28th position. Briana McMinn carded an 83 and was in 33rd place.
The medalist race was close as nine players were within at least three shots of the lead set by Jacksonville State's Ana Perez Altuna who carded a 1-under-par 71. MSU's Raeshya Surendran is two shots off the pace.
After Covid-19 pandemic cancelled the 2020 OVC Championship, the Racers are trying to win their fourth-straight OVC title. With 36 holes to play, MSU will need a strong second round when play begins Monday morning. The day for the Racers will start at 8:40 a.m. when McMinn hits MSU's first shot of the day. Other MSU tee times include Carter at 8:50 a.m., Forsythe at 9 a.m., Picchi at 9:10 a.m. and Surendran at 9:20 a.m.
The Racers will be paired with Austin Peay and Morehead State.
