Connor Coombs Makes Hole-In-One in SIUE Event At Gateway National

Murray State senior Connor Coombs had the thrill of making a hole-in-one and thus, sits in third place after 36 holes of the Derek Dolenc Invitational hosted by SIUE at Gateway National Golf Club. The final 18 holes come Tuesday morning in Madison, Illinois.

Coombs carded scores of 71-69=140 to get a spot in third place. Other MSU scores and places included Walker Bech in 37th place on scores of 72-78=150 and Quinn Eaton in 41st place on scores of 77-74=151. Kamaren Cunningham carded scores of 73-81=154 and was in 60th place, while Carson Holes was in 68th place after rounds of 77-79=156.

Coombs made a hole-in-one in the second round on his sixth hole at the No. 12 par-3. The senior from Central City, Ky., used a pitching wedge from 130 yards for an ace. His history-making shot is Murray State's first hole-in-one since 2017 when Austin Knight made an ace at the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament in Muscle Shoals, Ala. In 2016, MSU's Gabe Wheeler made a hole-in-one in Goodyear, Arizona and MSU Hall of Famer, Nick Newcomb, made an ace in Paducah, Ky. in 2008 on his way to winning the OVC individual championship.

MSU's Trey Lewis and Tyler Powell are playing the SIUE event in a group of 20 solo players. Lewis was the leader of the individual players after scores of 70-71=141 and had an overall spot in sixth place. Powell was in 48th position on scores of 76-76=152.

The Racers carded a morning round of 293, but fell four spots on the leader board after an afternoon 300. MSU's 593 puts them in eighth place, tied with Green Bay and six shots from seventh place Missouri State at 587. Leader UT Martin (566) was joined in the top-5 by Weber State (573), Austin Peay (580) and SIUE and South Dakota (584).
