Murray State Went 22-5 Overall This Weekend at the UNA Invitational
Following an impressive start to the fall at Central Arkansas, Murray State Women's Tennis kept their momentum going this weekend with a 22-5 record at the North Alabama Invitational in Florence, Alabama. The invitational included Murray State, UT Martin, North Alabama, and Alabama A&M.
Â
"The goal for this weekend was to get better in all aspects and we definitely did that. We talked about staying in the moment and playing every point the right way and overall, the team did a fantastic job with trusting the process and not focusing on the outcome," said coach Jorge Caetano.
Â
The weekend started on Friday afternoon with doubles matches with the pairing of Annika Pschorr and Natalie Slezakova winning the first matchup of the tournament over UT Martin. In the following matchup against UNA, the duo of Stasya Sharapova and Sarah Bureau won their matchup with Gabrielle Geolier and Jordina Font winning their matchup as well.
Â
In their singles matches against Alabama A&M, all six Racers defeated their opponents to wrap up the Friday matches of the invitational.
Â
On Saturday, the Racers continued their success by going 6-0 in singles matches over OVC foe UT Martin and winning 14 of the 15 total matchups in the final day of competition.
Â
"The entire team competed well and having 5 of our players going undefeated and only dropping 2 matches in singles shows the depth we have in our lineup this year. Gabby and Stasya were clutch in the big moments winning 2 very close matches each," Caetano said.
Â
Newcomers Annika Pschorr (6-0) and Natalie Slezakova (4-0) remain undefeated in singles for the season, with the Racers going an extraordinary 16-2 in singles matches on the weekend and 6-3 in doubles for a very impressive 22-5 overall record in the tournament.
Â
"The returners keep setting the tone for the newcomers, but I couldn't be more proud of how Jordi and Annika are competing." Caetano said, "They are 11-1 combined in singles this year but most importantly they are doing it the right way, with great attitude and willingness to put in practice the things we have been working on daily."
