Volleyball grabs second home win for the weekend over the Redbirds
Murray State volleyball edges Illinois State in four sets at Racer Arena, Saturday.
Â
Both teams showed grit early in the match but the Racers were able to win the first set 26 to 24. The Redbirds took the edge on the second set 25 to 17.
Â
The Racers showed dominance in the third set by taking an early lead and winning it 25 to 17. The fourth set was a seesaw match as both teams had their own point runs, MSU ultimately was able to edge the win and seal the match to their favor.
Â
MSU grabbed two wins at home this weekend.
Â
"We worked hard and it showed, I hope the team takes (the two wins) as a momentum builder to play more volleyball," said assistant coach, Colton Reinholtz. "We served tough and got (Illinois State) out of their system."
Â
Bella Dearinger had her second start as a setter this season, she posted her first double-double of the season with 11 digs and 40 assists to help three Racers get more than 10 kills.
Â
"She did a good job of distributing and the fact that we have three players with double-digit kills is awesome," Reinholtz said. "Digging wise she has always been good at defense so there is no surprise there."
Â
Federica Nuccio leads the Racers in kills with 16 while also making 11 digs to post her 14th double-double of the season.
Â
Dahlia Miller leads in digs with 18 as the Racers made a total of 67 digs as a team. Miller also made four service aces.
Â
"As a libero you need to be good at passing, serving and defense, and she's good at all three," Reinholtz said. "Her float serves moves a lot especially in the end of the match helping us win this match."
Â
The Racers are travelling to Cedar Falls to go against the conference leaders, Northern Iowa, Friday.
