Murray State softball returned to action at the DePaul Dome Tournament in Rosemont, Illinois on Friday. The Racers came up short in both contests – falling to Butler and Seattle by scores of 6-0 and 3-2, respectively.
Game One - Butler 6, Murray St. 0
Butler used a well-executed squeeze to open the scoring push in their first run in the top of the third.
The Racers threatened in the bottom half with nobody out and runners on second and third but were unable to capitalize.
Butler went up 3-0 in the fourth scoring two unearned runs.
Kamryn Carcich showed off her wheels legging out a triple in the fifth.
Gracie Osborn led off the sixth with her second hit of the game and moved to third on a passed ball and a wild pitch but was left stranded.
The Bulldogs doubled their lead to 6-0 with three run in the top of the seventh.
Hannah James got the start in the circle for the season opener, throwing 4.0 innings, punching out seven. Jenna Veber closed out the final three innings striking out three. Of the Butler six runs, only three were earned.
Game Two - Seattle 3, Murray St. 2
Seattle got on the board first using a sac fly to go up 1-0 in the bottom of the first.
Carcich continue her hot start to the season with her second hit of the day, slapping a single through the right side. Lindsey Carroll provided the Racers offense, blasting a triple off the wall in left center, scoring Carcich to even the game at one.
The Redhawks used a solo home run to grab a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third.
With one out in the fifth, Logan Braundmeier hustled out a double to centerfield and moved to third on a passed ball but was unable to score.
Seattle extended their lead to 3-1 in the bottom half of the inning, scoring an unearned run and what proved to be the winning run.
Chaos ensued in the top of the seventh. Carroll led off the inning with a single to right and advanced to second when the right fielder bobbled the ball. A passed ball moved her to third and Taylor Jackson pulled the Racers within one with her RBI single to right. Next batter, Chloe Jacque had a slap hit but was called out for interference at first and pinch runner Jordan Caple had to return to first base after coming all the way around to score. After things settled down, Braundmeier singled to put runners on first and second but a hard hit fielder's choice ended the Racers comeback.
Emma Olejniczak, making her Racer debut, went 3.0 innings, only giving up one hit and one earned run. Jenna Veber came in and pitched the final three innings, striking out three.
The Racers will return to action on Saturday for two more contests at the DePaul Dome Tournament, beginning with a 12:00 p.m. meeting with Ball State followed by a match with host DePaul.
