Freshman Cunningham Goes Low In Spring Opener

The Murray State men's golf team played their first round of the spring season Sunday and freshman Kamaren Cunningham posted his career-low round for the Racers with a 6-under par 66 which was good for a spot in first place in a field of 121 competitors at Hammock Creek Golf Club in Palm City, Florida.

The Racers are competing at the Advance Golf Partners Collegiate, hosted by UNC Greensboro.

Cunningham started the round with a pair of birdies in his first three holes and after a bogey, finished the front-nine with five-straight pars for a 1-under-par 35 at the turn. He made three-straight birdies in holes 10-12, eagled the par-5 15^th hole and birdied the 17^th hole. His 5-under par 31 on the back-nine gave Cunningham a tidy 6-under-par 66 for his career-low round at MSU and tied for the best round for the Racers in the 2021-22 season. Quinn Eaton also had a 66 at the EKU Intercollegiate (Sept. 4).

Other MSU scores and standings included Eaton with a spot in 94th place after a 78 and Trey Lewis and Walker Beck who each carded a 79 for a spot in 103^rd place. Connor Coombs was in 115^th place after an 81. Tyler Powell is playing the event as an individual and was in 73rd place after a 76.

The Racers' first round 302 had them in 20th place in the field of 21 teams. The top-5 included leaders Creighton, Western Carolina and Mercer all at 284, plus Wofford (285) and Valparaiso (287).

With the 6-under par 66, Cunningham is the medalist leader with a one-shot lead over Garrett Giles of Iona.

The Advance Golf Partners Collegiate is being played at Hammock Creek, a Jack Nicklaus Legacy Design course that opened in 1996. Round two is Tuesday with the final round set for Wednesday.

About Murray State Athletics
